About the work
From the kitchen it looks fine. Then you walk out and the far corner drops a little more than the rest. Could be a footing that heaved over a wet winter. Could be a ledger that's been pulling water off the siding for years. Could be a porch somebody added on the cheap way back and nobody's had looked at since.
Louisville summers come in hot and thick with humidity, and that's what works on wood the hardest — rot, soft spots, fasteners letting go before the boards do. Winters bring enough freeze-thaw to shove anything that wasn't set deep and set right.

So we'd rather get specific before a single board gets ordered. Walk the yard. Look at how the house sits. Poke at the old porch if there's one still standing. Ask how you actually want to use the space. Then you get a real scope instead of a round number with half the details left out.
Yard slopes off toward the back? We'll bring it up. Old frame turns out worse once we're into it? You'll hear about it, not after the invoice lands. And if a repair gets you there without a full rebuild, we'll say so.

Pressure-treated pine, cedar, and the trade-offs with each. Looks like wood because it is, runs cheaper than most composite, and holds up for years when it's built right and you stay ahead of the humidity.

How we build decks
Footings have to be set right, below the frost line, on ground that doesn't always cooperate. Posts set and supported. Beams sized to carry the load. Joists spaced correctly. Hangers, fasteners, blocking, flashing, ledger attachment — all of it has to make sense together and pass inspection. And in a preservation district like Old Louisville, the design has to clear historic review before the first board goes down, which we plan around from the start.
This is where the bad work hides. A deck can wear a beautiful top board and still be wrong underneath where nobody's looking.
